Gambling Roulette for
Beginners
Rules
Roulette is somewhat unique amongst modern table
games in that it employs a mechanical device as the key element of the
game. This is the large and very distinct Roulette wheel, which is
mounted horizontally on one end of the table. The hollow of the wheel
has numbered pockets ranging from zero to thirty-six (and a '00' in
American Style Roulette).
Roulette consists of a wheel with 38 numbers, these include the
numbers 1-36, 0, and 00. After all the bets have been established the
wheel is spun and a ball is placed on the outer edge of the wheel. The
ball will then drop into one of the numbered pockets once the wheel
slows down. The numbers on the wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers
with pairs of even numbers and alternate between black and red. The
two zeros are green in color and are placed at opposite ends of the
wheel. The object of the game is to determine which number or color
the ball with ultimately land on.
The table layout is arranged so that the 36 numbers are arranged in 3
columns of 12 numbers each. The numbers are in sequence, and can be
either red or black, depending on the number. There are two types of
roulette bets: inside bets and outside bets. The 6 inside bets:
straight bet, split bet, street bet, corner bet, five number bet, and
a line bet. There are three basic outside bets: even-money, column,
and dozen bets. You can place as many different types of bets at any
time. There are no limits to the number of wagers placed on each spin.
There is a winning number display at the top right of your screen to
help you find the last winning numbers. The common perception is that
if a number has not been shown as winning in a long time, it could be
time to put a stake on that number!
Wagers in Roulette are placed on an area of the table marked with a
pattern of boxes and numbers. This is called the game layout. You may
place wagers on any particular number, any 4 adjacent numbers, a
column or a 'dozens' bet.
The wheel is used to determine the outcome of a game of Roulette. Once
the bets have been placed the wheel is set spinning and a small
(usually metal or ivory) ball is spun onto the wheel in the opposite
direction to that of the spinning wheel. The ball will rapidly loose
speed and eventually stop in one of the pockets. The number of the
pocket is the winning number.
The object of the game is to determine which number or color the ball
will ultimately land on.
In Roulette the player places a bet on a number,
color, or group of numbers on the Roulette table.
The more numbers they bet, the lesser the odds and
therefore winnings. The dealer will always announce "No More Bets"
when he or she is about to spin the wheel.
The dealer spins the roulette wheel in one
direction, while rolling a ball into the wheel in the opposite
direction and winnings are determined by the slot on the Roulette
wheel where the ball finally stops.
The amount of the payoff depends on how the bet was
placed.
Features
The Spin button will start a game of
roulette by setting the wheel in motion and injecting the ball onto
the wheel. The Spin button will only be available if you have at least
one credit on the table.
The table felt is divided up according to the pattern of a
traditional roulette table. It is strongly suggested that you read up
about the kinds of bets available in the Types of Bets section. To
place a wager on any of these bet types simply left click on the table
to increase the size of your bet, and right click to decrease.
The Chip Size menu allows you to adjust the size of the
increments of your wager. If you are using a Chip size of 1 then each
mouse click will only add or remove 1 from the current pile of chips
on the table.
Under the Options menu you can find the 'Quick Spin' feature.
If activated this feature will stop all game related animations as
soon as a reply is received from the Casino's server. This means that
you will not have to wait for the Roulette wheel animations to slow
down before seeing the game result and being able to play again. This
feature can be toggled on or off.
The Undo, Redo, Clear and Repeat buttons are provided to allow you to
rapidly change the bets on the table.
The Undo button removes all changes made to the table since the
last bet.
The Redo button reverses the effect of the Undo.
The Clear button removes all chips.
The Repeat button will return the table to the same state it
was in before the previous spin of the wheel. It will replace any
wagers that were removed from the table

United States Rules, except Atlantic City
Most roulette wheels in the United States have both
a zero and a double zero. These double zero roulette games have a
house edge on every bet of 1/19, or 5.26%, except the 0-00-1-2-3
combination which has a house edge of 3/38 or 7.89%.
A few places offer single zero roulette in which
the edge on every bet is 1/37, or 2.70%. The list below shows some
places that I have seen or heard have single zero roulette, although
keeping it up to date is not a priority of mine. These single zero
wheels usually have a high minimum.
Atlantic City Rules
Atlantic City roulette uses a double zero wheel but
follows the European imprisonment rule (see below) on even money bets.
This lowers the house edge on the red, black, odd, even, 1 to 18, and
19 to 36 bets to 1/38, or 2.63%. At the Claridge, and possibly other
casinos, even money bets only lose half on a single or double zero,
which amounts to the same house edge.
European Rules
There are two differences between United States
rules and European rules. The first is that in Europe there is only
one zero. The second is called the "imprisonment" rule which states
that if the ball lands in zero all even money bets are imprisoned. If
on the next spin the bet wins the wager is returned. If the next spin
is another zero then half the bet is returned. If the bet otherwise
loses on the next spin then the house collects the full bet. The house
edge is 1/74, or 1.35%, on the even money bets and 1/37, or 2.70%, on
all others.
